Chronically The Patient Empowerment Newsletter
The desert of chronic illness is vast and unforgiving. We navigate its sands, consumed by the relentless thirst for survival – symptom management, doctor visits, and the constant battle against limitations. Yet, in this desperate quest, a crucial truth is often lost: neglecting wellness is a price too high to pay.
My own chronic illness journey has been a stark revelation of this forgotten cost. Years spent chasing survival turned me into a reactive warrior, bouncing from specialist to specialist, procedure to procedure, drug to drug. I became a walking encyclopedia of symptoms, skilled in the art of comparing battle scars with fellow warriors online. But in this relentless pursuit, I forgot how to truly live.
Joyful hobbies were abandoned, replaced by the constant need to rest for the next appointment. Social connections withered, sacrificed at the altar of fatigue. Exercise, a long-term boon, became a short-term foe, its temporary discomfort outweighing the future benefits. Even healthy food became a casualty of comfort, leaving me paying the price later. My purpose, beyond the confines of illness, faded in the haze of survival.
The survival trap is real, my friends, but it's not the only path. As a chronic illness advocate and fellow traveler, I urge us to reclaim our wellbeing , to make it a priority as urgent as survival itself.
This systemic approach demands a shift in mindset:
Redefining Health: We are not just symptom lists and medical records. True health encompasses mental, emotional, social, and spiritual wellbeing. Prioritize joy, meaning, and social connection – they are vital nutrients for our souls.
Nourishing the Body: Food, movement, and sleep are not just luxuries; they are the foundation for resilience. Seek nutritional guidance , explore gentle movement , and prioritize quality sleep. Celebrate small wins – a good day here and there is a victory worth savoring.
Finding Purpose Beyond Illness: We are more than our diagnoses. Rediscover your passions, share your gifts with the world, and contribute in ways that ignite your spirit. Your purpose fuels your fight.
Loving Your Body: This vessel carries you through this journey. Treat it with kindness, appreciate its strengths , and shower it with gratitude. Remember, it's your partner in this fight.
This path is not easy. It requires support, advocacy, and a relentless shift in focus. But with each intentional step, we move beyond mere survival and reclaim the vibrant life that lies within. Remember, even the smallest oasis can nourish a soul parched by the desert winds.
And for those facing severe limitations, bedridden or homebound, remember – wellness is possible. It starts with a mindset shift , recognizing that small, intentional actions can make a world of difference.
Nutrition: Seek professional guidance to maximize your intake within restrictions. Consider high-calorie shakes or supplements. Prioritize hydration.
Movement: Even gentle stretches, leg lifts, or chair yoga tailored to your abilities can benefit your body.
Sleep: Maintain a consistent sleep schedule, avoid screens before bed, and explore sleep aids like white noise or bed devices if pain disrupts your rest.
Stress Management: Breathe deeply, meditate, or find solace in prayer to manage stress.
Social Connection: Stay connected with loved ones through calls, texts, or virtual visits. Support groups offer invaluable connection with others facing similar challenges.
Cognitive Stimulation: Engage your mind with audiobooks, online classes, puzzles, or even nature documentaries.
Bring Nature In: Open windows, display nature photos, surround yourself with plants, and bring calming natural sounds or aromas into your space.
Joy and Purpose: Nurture passions and hobbies, find ways to contribute even within limitations, and stay grounded in what brings you joy and meaning.
Gratitude and Self-Care: Be kind to yourself, find daily uplifts, and indulge in small moments of self-care. You deserve them.
By discovering these unique ways to nourish your mind, body, and spirit , you honor your inherent worth and reclaim your well-being, one mindful step at a time. Remember, you deserve more than mere survival. You deserve to thrive , even in the heart of the desert.
Let us walk this path together, reclaiming not just our health, but our whole selves , one oasis at a time.
With unwavering support,
Your fellow warrior, Roi Shternin
